literally, "love for the fire," near the fire. Pottage was cooked near the fire but not on it to avoid burning. This was accomplished by hanging the pot on a chain over the fire, cooking over the embers or on the hearthstone. The term is used also for people gathering around the hearth on a cold winter night where they sing, tell stories or even sleep next to it. [ES: Perry.
