HYSSOP SYRUP ADAPTED FROM HUICI'S TRANSLATION OF ANON ANDALUS #505 JARABE DE HISOPO, pp 275-276
2 tbsp and 1 tsp hyssop
2 tbsp and 1 tsp fennel
4 ¾ tbsp anise
2 tbsp and 1 tsp jububes
2 tbsp and 1 tsp melon seeds
2 tbsp and 1 tsp serpent melon seeds
2 tbsp lavender
2 tbsp maiden hair
4 ¾ tbsp skin from fennel roots
4 ¾ tbsp skin from celery roots
4 ¾ tbsp sugar
Put all the ingredients except the sugar into a pan. Cover with water and covered the pan with a lid. Bring it to a boil. Let steep one half hour. Strain it into another saucepan. Add sugar and cook over medium heat until the consistency is like syrup. Drink mix 3 tbsp with 6 tbsp hot water before breakfast. It eliviates productive cough and stops brain abscesses. It dissolves phemgm from other parts of the body and stimulates urination and menstrual flow. It fortifies the stomach
Take an ûqiya of hyssop and two of fennel and anise, and an ûqiya each of jujubes, watermelon seeds and cucumber seeds, and a handful of cleaned figs, two handfuls each of lavender and cilantro of the spring, and two ûqiyas each of the skin of fennel stalk and the skin of celery stalk. Cook all this in water to cover until its substance comes out; then take the clean part of it and add it to two ratls of sugar, and cook all this until it takes the consistency of syrup. Drink an ; ûqiya and a half of this in three of hot water when fasting. It benefits in moist coughs and stops intracranial abscesses; it dissolves phlegm from the other parts of the body and causes urine and menstrual fluid to flow, it fortifies the stomach, and it held in esteem for its benefits.
