Manatee Best Friends Forever
Photo from: Carol Grant
L . Trichechus manatus, Eng. manatee. This large plant-eating aquatic mammal lives in shallow tropical waters in West Africa. It has flippers, no feet and a broad, flat, rounded tail. Its mouth is like that of an ox. The eyes are small. It has a thick body and the female has nipples. The meat is excellent fresh, dried or pickled. The head was thought to diminish kidney stones and back pain. It was forbidden to eat it during Lent as it tastes like beef. [Castro. Alimentación. 1996:323-324]
