variety of red grape native of northwestern Spain where it is used to make Galician wine with a velvety texture. Wineries producing Mencía wines include: Valdeorras, Monterrei and Ribeira. 2. the vineyard producing it, which are only in Galicia and western León, Spain and northern Portugal.
